Heimsmyndun

Heimsmyndun lýsir sköpun annarra, ímyndaðra heima. Þessir heimar eru eins og kímera, sem detta í sundur jafn auðveldlega og þeir koma saman. Seyðisfjörður er staðsettur við botn fjarðar á Íslandi í Norður-Atlantshafi, oft einangraður frá flutningsleiðum – og er aðeins aðgengilegur um Fjarðarheiði eða sjóleiðina. Í landi þar sem jarðfræði og loftslag virðist hafna búsetu manna, notar Sluice 2025 þemað sem upphafspunkt til að kanna samband okkar við heiminn og sögurnar sem við segjum okkur sjálfum um stöðu okkar innan hans.

Viðburðir á vegum Sluice fara fram víðs vegar um Seyðisfjörð frá föstudeginum 23. maí til sunnudags 25. maí. Hátíðin opnar kl. 19:00 fimmtudaginn 22. maí í Heima. Hægt er að sjá alla dagskrána á heimasíðu Sluice: https://sluice.info/events/seydisfjordur.

The eleventh edition of Sluice’s peripatetic international expo is alighting in the far east of Iceland in the isolated town of Seyðisfjörður (population 670). Sluice Seyðisfjörður is an international expo of artist and curator-led projects each addressing the concept of world-building as a means to explore how we build worlds within our own. How these re-imagined, alternative worlds reflect back at us our dissatisfaction with the world as-is and point towards utopic/dystopic alternates. We recognise the danger of the current historical moment, and also its potential.

Rallying under the title Sluice Seyðisfjörður: World-Building, 17 projects will exhibit over 200 artists in 11 venues around Seyðisfjörður from 23 to 25 May 2025.

In tandem with the expo, Sluice Film Festival will be staged at Herðubíó cinema, the only cinema in east Iceland. Sluice Film Festival will show 17 artist’s short films on the subject of world-building, culminating in a prize-giving for ‘best in show’ awarded by artists David Blandy and Kamilla Gylfadóttir.

Exhibitions, screenings, talks, and performances will be situated throughout the Seyðisfjörður community and industrial areas. The exhibiting projects come from the UK, USA, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Iceland and New Zealand. The World-Building expo has been jointly developed and delivered by Seyðisfjörður based LungA School and London based SLUICE

Location: Various locations throughout Seyðisfjörður, Iceland
Headquartered around LungA School, Austurvegur 4, 710 Seyðisfjörður, Iceland
When: 23 - 25 May

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS

SLUICE is a UK based non-profit artist and curator-led initiative that since 2011 has worked exclusively with other non-profit artist and curator-led initiatives and collectives. Sluice is concerned with the impact of the societal and economic environment on the arts but also how the arts can in turn impact our societal and economic environment. Sluice has staged fairs and biennials in London, expos in New York and Berlin. Sluice publishes an eponymous biannual magazine. Previous editions have focused on themes such as Territory, The Vernacular, DIWO, Inter/Nationalism, Values and Exchange.

LungA School is an independent, artist-led institution and situation where we experiment with artistic and land-based practices as a way of doing, thinking and being in order to cultivate, disturb, distort and transform our notions of aesthetics, learning, perception and good judgement. As the name implies it considers itself a school, but if we imagine that we did not only call it a school, but something
else such as ‘a work of art’, or ‘a commune’ these terms seem to be able to fit as well, and not only do they fit, but they seem to be able to describe some aspects of this place which we consider to be essential.
